This piece commemorates John Muir's first visit to Yosemite Valley in the spring of 1868.
John Muir was a naturalist, author, and advocate for the preservation of wilderness in the United States.
After his first visit to Yosemite, Muir became transfixed with the stunning vistas, spending years of his life exploring and documenting his findings in the area. Later in life, while on an excursion with then President Theodore Roosevelt, it is believed that he convinced Roosevelt to create the National Park system, including Yosemite, so that the wilderness could be preserved.
